Tips to transitioning to a plant based diet

The single most impactful lifestyle change you can make for your health is to eat more plants.  Plant based diets in study after study are shown help fight cancer, relieve autoimmune disease, alleviate various mental health and endocrine disorders, reduce weight, and improve heart disease.  Yet, it is sometimes confusing as to how to navigate such a change.

I changed to a plant based diet six years ago and have never looked back.  I feel better, look better, and move better. Goodbye breakouts, mood swings, aches, and pains. Here are five tips to set you up for a more vibrant you.
  1. Begin where you are.  Eat more of the plants you like. Learn new ways to cook and prepare them.  Then gradually add in other vegetables and fruits as your sense of adventure increases.
  2. Avoid substitutes. Just because it says vegan on the package does not mean it’s healthier.  Vegan cheese is not necessarily better for you than cow, sheep, or goat milk cheese. Often it is healthier to eat the real thing than a substitute which can contain chemicals and can be highly processed.
  3. Include plants in every meal and snack.  
  4. Don’t sacrifice your protein for vegetables and fruit; instead, let your portions of bread, pasta, and rice reduce to make way for more veggies.  By keeping up your protein, you will have more energy and create a leaner body.
  5. Have fun!  This is a transition, not a race or death sentence.  Do what you feel comfortable remembering that with each vegetable choice you add to your vitality.
