Gaining Body Confidence

9/15/2020

Body confidence is a gift I have not because it came naturally to me, but because I cultivate it.  I expect health and I appreciate the shape and curves of my body. Simone de Beauvoir, a wonderful French groundbreaking feminist, said, “To lose confidence in one's body is to lose confidence in oneself.” I am ultimately all I have, so if I lose confidence in myself, I lose my connection to my inner wisdom and God. That I cannot let happen.  So I developed a personal practice which reconnects me to confidence.

  1. Be in the expectation of health even when you are sick.  I watch over how I talk to myself.  If I get sick or notice something isn’t right in my health, I pay attention.  I do what is necessary - go to the doctor, rest, get more sleep, undergo treatment - but as I do it I constantly praise my body, I express confidence that it knows what to do to get better, and I trust what my intuition is telling me to do.  I do not scold myself for getting sick.  If I find myself criticizing myself, I immediately choose to replace that statement with a more positive one.
  2. I realize I need to cooperate with my body.  I cannot expect health or healing if I am not doing my part: sleeping, reducing stress with meditation and stillness, and eating whole foods.  Sleep as well as you can.  Be still and slow down - without any special techniques slowing down will lower your stress. Eat vegetables and fruits mainly - they have the healing power in them. Everything else is to build your body (protein) or added energy. Vegetables and fruits help healing.
  3. Every day I spend a few minutes looking at myself - taking myself in.  Best to do this before your shower or bath when you are alone and safe.  Take a moment.  Look at yourself and bathe your body with kind words.  Appreciate your arms, your legs, your curves, your skin, your eyes, your hair, your lips, your hands, your feet, your toes, your fingers. Say, “I love myself unconditionally. Thank you body for all the ways you serve me and help me to live my life. I appreciate you, I love you.”

It is not an overnight transformation, but with daily practice of expectation, cooperation, and adoration you will develop more body confidence and find yourself moving through the world more confidently.  As you develop confidence, you will see greater health, ease in making changes you desire for yourself, and more outward confidence.

Dandelions
Prebiotics are plant fibers that feed the healthy bacteria lining of your gut. Probiotics, on the other hand, are live healthy bacteria that you eat in yogurt or miso which helps repopulate the gut when the healthy bacteria need assistance.  One prebiotic food I have been striving to integrate as the weather cools is dandelion leaves.
Picture
As the weather cools, they become less bitter, but still are great support for your digestive flora and help detoxify the liver.  I use dandelion sprouts for me and my clients because they are more nutritionally potent and have a softer texture.  I also use them in salads chopped finely.  This year I grew an Italian variety in the garden for a steady supply.

The Luck Factor
Being in a state of positive expectation is one of the keys to happiness and realizing the opportunities that are all around you. I love books that teach and remind me to practice optimism.
The Luck Factor opens you to habits which will help you see the opportunities around you and make your life fuller and more connected.

doing

Heart Opener is my favorite yoga pose.  It allows you to clear your head, release stress, and to feel more open to the light and love which surround you.  10-15 minutes a day is transformative.  I am focusing on my ability to receive more, so I wish to increase my energetic openness to the love and support of the universe.

To do it place a yoga block on a cushion.  Gently lower yourself with the lower edge of the block hitting where your bra strap comes across.your back.  Relax for 10-15 minutes.

Ginger and turmeric are my staple as I head into fall.  As you get older, inflammation can wreak havoc on your body.  I am trying to sneak it in wherever possible to feel my best.  This Labor Day whip a Ginger Turmeric Mocktail for 2.
Ingredients:
2 cups grapefruit juice
2 inches of ginger
1 inch of turmeric
Wildflower honey
Sparkling Water
Crushed ice

Picture
  1. Grate ginger and turmeric in a pitcher and pour in grapefruit juice and 1 or 2 tablespoons honey. Mix with a wooden spoon and let juice sit for a few minutes to several hours in the refrigerator to allow the flavors to develop.
  2. Before serving, strain juice to remove pulp, ginger, and turmeric.  Add in sparkling water to top off and mellow the flavor.  Enjoy!
Reading
One of my favorite books of the summer was recommended by a client, Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb.  It is about a therapist, her therapist, and the vicissitudes of modern life.  The book was engaging, vulnerable, and inspiring.  So much so, two other members of my family thoroughly enjoyed it.

Doing
Dry brushing daily.  Dry brushing just feels good.  Right before getting into the shower, starting at my feet or fingertips, I take long strokes upward toward the torso.  Then circles at the belly, breast, and back.  Dead skin is gently removed, circulation improved, and your skin feels so soft afterwards.

Happy Labor Day!

September Challenge

Wellness is a practice of taking care of yourself in private so that in the rest of your life you feel better and can do all the things you want. It is a lifelong commitment built on individual actions and choices. One way that I keep myself on track is throughout the year, I do various projects and challenges that support my wellness.

For fall, I chose to focus on being my best self - in all the ways: mindset, body, happiness, purpose, nutrition. I invite you to join me or create a challenge of your own.

Here is how you begin to hone in on what, at this moment and time, it means to be your best self.

Complete the sentence: ”I want to feel” as many times as you can. Choose 3-4 statements that feel really exciting or good to you. There are no wrong choices. Remember when you work on something, it automatically elevates all the areas of your life.

The four statements I chose were:
I want to feel more limber and flexible.
I want to feel balanced.
I want to feel focused.
I want to feel vibrant.

Now think of habits, foods, activities, places, or experiences that support the statements you chose. This is a brainstorm. When you are done you will choose a few which you will integrate into the next few months.

Here is what I did.

I want to feel more limber and flexible.
Eat more turmeric & ginger - anti-inflammatories.
Do a weekly self massage or receive a massage. Daily take time to stretch.

I want to feel balanced.
Schedule acupuncture to balance energy.
Spend time in nature.
Each morning spend 20 minutes in meditation and prayer.

I want to feel focused.
Create a written hourly schedule.
Remove the clutter in my space and schedule. Spend less time with people that distract me from my goals.

I want to feel vibrant.
Change my routines to add freshness.
Prioritize sleep.
Dance every day.
Eat lots of raw foods.

Once you complete this practice, you have goals and definitions of what it means to be your best self. From here we begin and let me inspire and cheer you on.

Love,
Julia
