Customize Your Meditation

How can you see results from your meditation practice more quickly? Start with the type of meditation for your goals.

When people ask how I teach meditation, I explain to them my very results driven approach to meditation.

In private meditation consultations, or My Meditation as I refer to it, I choose the mediation that is aligned with the client's goals. Meditation is not a one size fits all prescription - I want clients to see results, so we use the meditation suited to their needs.

To encourage your home practice, here are three types of meditation I use most often.
  • To improve sleep, cognitive function, lessen anxiety, and to clear the mind:
I teach clients to use Focus Meditation. In this form of meditation, I ask clients to focus their mental attention of specific parts of their body, sounds, or sensations. The demand of focusing your attention and senses on a particular point easily clears the mind of thoughts. And, although it may be difficult in the beginning, it allows the brain to deeply rest.
  • To increase calm, mental stamina, and emotional self-intimacy Observational Meditation is most beneficial. 
In this form of meditation, I ask clients to simply watch their thoughts, emotions, body, or experiences. I frequently use the analogy of observing your life from a helicopter or watching your thoughts as a third party. This type of meditation allows you to give up judgement and begin to observe aspects of the present you haven’t noticed. By stepping back you often receive intuitive hits on next steps or the direction to move toward. This type of meditation also helps to grow your attention span and is great for students.
  • For clients that desire to strengthen their mental faculties and are seeking to reduce blood pressure or recover from PTSD:
I use Mantra Meditations to open access to the quiet knowing, creative space within each of us. Here is where you solve the problems that seem tangled and access new ideas.

Frequently these approaches are interwoven in a session with others added to produce the type of transformation available through meditation. I encourage you to think of your goals for your practice and experiment with the types of meditation most suited to helping you get there.
